Las Nubes Ecotourism Center Chiapas

Las Nubes Chiapas

In case you don’t know what the Chiapas Clouds are, here we explain it to you.

Within the Lacandon jungle there is an ecotourism center named Las Nubes Chiapas.

This ecotourism center was born from the impressive effect created by the current of the Santo Domingo River as it cascades into a waterfall. The force of the water flutters in the torrent of the fall and its white color resembles clouds.

In short, the waterfalls of the ecotourism center and the natural effects of these waterfalls resemble clouds and that is why it has been named as the ecotourism center Las Nubes.

How to get to Las Nubes Chiapas

Where are the Chiapas clouds located?

Las Nubes Chiapas is located in the municipality of Maravilla Tenejapa. 272 km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and 120 km from the city of Comitán; in this ejido, indigenous people of the Tzotzil and Tzeltal groups live together.

To get to this natural reserve you have three options: by car, public transportation or tourist services.

The best way to get to the Chiapas Clouds

Due to the complexity of the road we recommend using this tourist service to get there: Excursion to the Clouds Chiapas.

This is the safest option, it includes your access, the transfer from your hotel and back and a guide.

It is important to know that the most convenient way to visit the waterfalls is to take the excursion from San Cristobal.

There is also an excursion from Tuxtla but it is more expensive and takes longer to get there.

How to get there by car

If you own a car, here’s what you should know:

  1. To get there take highway 307 Palenque-La Trinitaria and, passing Jerusalem and Gallo Giro, you will be at your destination.
  2. The best thing to do is to save the GPS route in your cell phone to use it offline and take you to this ecotourism place.

One of the reasons why we recommend using the Excursion to the Clouds Chiapas is because the road is in very bad condition and the last stretch is dirt road.

How to get there by public transportation

It is not advisable to get to Las Nubes this way, it is quite complicated and takes too much time. Anyway, here is some information:

  1. In Comitán there are a number of trucks that leave at different times and arrive in 4 to 5 hours.
  2. You will have to go to Montebello Lakes, ask the driver where you can get off to go to the Chiapas Clouds.
  3. The driver will probably drop you off at a crossroads where you will have to wait for a motorcycle cab to take you to the ecotourism center.

Tips for visiting the Chiapas Clouds

Here are some tips to make the most of your visit

Wear comfortable, lightweight, non-cotton clothing. This type of fabric tends to get quite damp, and in the face of year-round humidity it can become uncomfortable. Also, if you want, use your swimsuit as part of your aquatic clothing and footwear to avoid slipping.

Carry all necessary cash. We are in the jungle, there are no ATMs or much technology available for miles around. Budget well and carry what you need.

Bring everything you need with you. Access to Las Nubes is complicated, so there are no stores or places where you can do last minute shopping.

Here it is very common to spend vacation periods enjoying all these sites. If you come in high season, prices can double and demand increases. There are more people and the place fills up. Take it into account for your visit.

Put the phone down for a while. The signal is lousy, seriously. But you can hire a local wireless Internet service for $20($1 dollar) pesos per hour. We recommend that it be for very specific cases. It’s okay if you are offline for a while.

Take care of the site and facilities. In the end, it belongs to everyone and the more we take care of these sites, the longer we will be able to enjoy them.

Now you know everything you need to know about Las Nubes, Chiapas.
